In January, we were delighted to see the first residents move in to our Terlingham Gardens development in Hawkinge. Terlingham Gardens is a gated community of 2 and 2/3 bedroom bungalows exclusively for the over 55s.

One of the first to move in was second-time Pentland Homes owner, Helen Woolley, 81, who is delighted with her new home.

“It’s all going well,” says Mrs Woolley. “Even though only three homes have been moved in to, I feel quite safe here already. It’s more of a community, the people are more my age, and we’ve got the shops right here.”

Mrs Woolley moved from just a few miles away, from her home at another Pentland development; Scholars Village in Folkestone.

“I loved it at Scholars Village, and I had a nice house, but it was the stairs unfortunately,” says Mrs Woolley. “I was going to get a stair-lift, but I found I didn’t want to go to bed at night upstairs. Here it’s much better for me.”

One of the key factors that attracted Mrs Woolley to the development was proximity to local amenities, with the development just a few minutes’ walk from the Terlingham Forum shopping area and the expanding Lidl supermarket.

“I’ve got the shops much closer here, and my doctors is here, and the hairdressers, and there’s a little cafe I’ve been in twice already,” says Mrs Woolley.

With so many amenities close by, Helen plans to invest in a walking frame as an addition to her motorised bike, and is looking forward to taking full advantage of the beautifully maintained communal gardens on the development.

“With the communal gardens and level access, I can go wandering around,” she says. “One day, I got back from the hospital before it got dark, I went for a walk around just to see what it was like. I’ve only done that once as the weather has been a bit cold, but when the sun comes out it will be beautiful!”

Despite living in Folkestone for just a couple of years, she is very much at home here.

“It’s beautiful; you have the countryside and the seaside. Every time I go to London for a hospital appointment, I come back, and see the hills in Folkestone, and think ‘I’m home.’”

Having always dreamed of owning a bungalow, Mrs Woolley had found that the high maintenance and high cost offerings on the second-hand market did not meet her needs. She was therefore delighted to find a bungalow at Terlingham Gardens was within her budget, and felt much more confident with the low maintenance offering of a new build.

The move was facilitated by the Pentland Homes Part-Exchange scheme, where, on selected properties, customers agree a price with Pentland Homes for the purchase of their old home, based on the valuation of 3 independent estate agents. The scheme enabled Helen to have a stress-free move, without worrying about lengthy chains, and she was full of praise for the service she received from Pentland Homes staff, both at Terlingham Gardens and at Scholars Village.

Mrs Woolley is on her third new build home, and certainly enjoys the peace of mind that comes from knowing her new home is virtually maintenance-free.

At Terlingham Gardens, not only are all homes covered by an NHBC 10 year structural warranty, and the 2 year Pentland Homes warranty, but within the annual service charge all garden maintenance is covered along with buildings insurance, window and gutter cleaning and you don’t even have to worry about putting your bins out; it’s all taken care of!

At over 900 square feet, Mrs Woolley’s new home is actually larger than her previous home, and has a spacious open plan kitchen and living area, plenty large enough for her family – including her daughter’s boisterous golden retriever – to come over for a visit, or for family to stay, with a spare room and second bathroom all part of this fabulous bungalow.

“To spend these years of my life in a bungalow is marvellous,” says Woolley. There’s still plenty of unpacking to do, but I’m hoping by the time summer comes, I’ll just be able to sit here and not do a thing!”
