The Village Life

Perched on top of the North Downs at 508ft above sea level, Hawkinge provides stunning views of nearby Cheriton and Folkestone. Hawkinge is perhaps best known for the major role it played in defending our skies throughout World War II, with RAF Hawkinge being the closest operational airfield to France. Today however, life in Hawkinge is much more peaceful and down to earth.

The village boasts thriving local shops, a church, community centre, cricket club, two riding schools and several local pubs in the locality. There is also a doctor’s surgery, two pharmacies and a dental practice. The weekly shop can be undertaken at a local supermarket or, a little further away, there is a Tesco Express convenience store.

In & Around

The Kent Battle of Britain Museum in Hawkinge pays tribute to the men, women and machinery which played such a crucial role in the war effort. It is well worth a visit and a great way to spend time learning from the knowledgeable and dedicated curators.

Just south of the village, nestled on the gentle south facing slopes, is the award-winning Terlingham Vineyard and Winery, England’s smallest commercial vineyard where you can enjoy wonderful, delicate English wines produced from traditional methods.

A little further afield lies the charming port town of Folkestone, with its Creative Quarter, unique histories and expansive, wilderness escapes. Perfect for days out and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, there’s the whole Kent coast to explore, all this and Calais just 35 minutes away! Alternatively, a visit to London is just 52 minutes away via High Speed 1 from Folkestone Central Railway Station.
